It's a good idea to have a sketch/design or a plan, or even a blueprint, before you contact a contractor. This way, you know you are showing them what you want, and any bids you get will be on the same plan and specifications. You'll be comparing apples to apples. In order to obtain a permit, you will need a set of plans anyway, so why not get them up front and make it easier for everyone? |

Most contractors are not designers, nor do they draft plans. Many can't afford the time to listen to your ideas, put them down on paper, present a sketch or something, all at the risk of not even getting the job. Not all are completely conversant with the building codes. | |
